Ever wonder why there are so many types of zippers.
I was never a zipper expert until my inventor friend showed me his zipper slider. My wife called me to say that I had to come home and see this idea. I was impressed by the slider and the spring plate. He had already applied for a patent and was going through the process. He and I went to a machine shop to have a good prototype made. After $7000 we had a semi working prototype. I said at this rate we will never make it. I started making prototypes myself. Chris would use them so many times that he would wear them out. I used soft aluminum. We got our patent and headed for our first test to see if anyone would buy these. We were at an inventors fair and about 100 people came by our folding table with a pile of clothes on it. After seeing it work about 75 of those people wanted one. It was then that I knew we had a winner product. So much for our little story.
The reason that there are so many types of zippers is that there is a staff of people that do nothing but think up new ways to zip up everything. They started with the hook and loop and then came up with a toothed zipper that interlocked teeth using a slider. That has been the mainstay for many years. It had one major flaw. If your zipper split behind your slider you were in for a treat of trying to get out or in that garment. You had to slowly try to work the slider back to the starting point and then get out. From that point on that garment was not tustworthy. The brains said we got to come up with a way to fix that. That is what they call a coil zipper. It has the ability to go backwards over a split zipper. That's the good news. The bad news is that it is much weaker than a toothed zipper. We spoke to a customs inspector who said he can open a coil zipper on a suitcase with a pen. Weak weak weak. The military sent us new zipper that is 5 times stronger than a coil zipper. They still have the problem when they split. They just don't split as often but the slider does wear out. That is where is where we fit in. We can go backwards over a spit toothed zipper without damaging the teeth. Now the world can go back to the much stronger toothed zipper with the benefits of the coil zipper. Be sure to write your congressman and tell him you want the much stronger toothed zipper on all your important articles of clothing and equipment. (Just kidding of course)
Spring plate is the answer.
The spring plate lets our slider have a little flex that allows it to go backwards over a slpit. The thumbscrew lets you remove and reuse it. It will outlast the item it is used on and then take it off and repair something else.
